Congratulations to Creed Gardiner, winner of the John Addison Porter Prize. The Porter Prize is a university-wide prize given for a writen work of scholarship in any field in which it is possible, through original effort, to gather and relate facts, principles, or both, and to make the product of general human interest. Creed’s essay, “’I would have liked to do more, but our hands are tied’: Mormon Apoliticism in Arizona’s Borderlands,” examines how Mormon residents of southern Arizona interpret the Church of Jesus Chris of Latter-Day Saints’ policies, practices, and views regarding immigration, often leading to tension between sympathy for immigrants and traditional apoliticism.
