Julian Posada, “Data Work and Territory: How Artificial Intelligence Depends on Solidarity”

Artificial intelligence (AI) heavily relies on large-scale data sets, frequently sourced from workers globally. This talk examines the complex interplay between Venezuelan data workers, their communities, their natural environments, and their resistance against extractive capitalism. The significance of these workers and the data they generate for the American technology industry extends beyond their employment conditions and Venezuela’s economic circumstances; it is intimately connected with their territories. These territories, characterized by community solidarity, offer added value by socially and environmentally sustaining the workers, thus facilitating their digital work. Therefore, the integration of labor, resources, and community support in these territories constitutes a crucial element that enables digital technologies such as AI.
