Ittai Orr works on the intersection of race, disability, gender, and 18th and 19th century American/circumatlantic literature. His dissertation recovers the many possible meanings of intelligence before its standardization, tracing its emergence as a guiding concept over the course of the first century of the republic and the centrality of literacy and literature to notions of ability, nation, and race.
