Alexia Williams (joint with African American Studies) graduated Salutatorian from Spelman College in 2012 with a B.A. in English and Spanish. Her research compares how the discourse on race in the United States and throughout South America reflects the social realities of black and indigenous peoples. As a Mellon Mays Undergraduate Research Fellow, Alexia examined how 20th century Afro-Peruvian poetry operated as a method of protest to challenge socio-literary exclusion and marginalization in Peru. Alexia is currently interested in examining 19th and 20th century black travel literature to understand how international travel can shape black social consciousness, and empower women against global issues of violence.
